Make your own Sweet Potato Pie
Only you will not be able to eat this pie, but your fabric pie will look as good as Mama's and last much longer.

To make a pie pot holder or a pie scented sachet you will need the following materials:

¼ yard orange printed or plain fabric for pie filling
¼ yard brown or tan fabric for crust
¼ yard batting for insulation
Needle, thread, scissors, pins, pencil
Scented spices such as: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves or potpourri Tiny brown beads and fabric glue (optional)

The pie filling:

1. With your pencil, trace and cut two 6 ½ inch orange circles for the pie filling.

2. Using one orange circle as a guide cut out two 6 ½ inch circles of batting.

3. Place two pieces of batting between the orange circles. Like a sandwich.

4. With needle and thread, sew all 4 layers together leaving a small opening and stuff with potpourri and left over batting. Then stitch close.
If you are making a pot holder, do not include potpourri.

Now you are ready to make your pie crust.

The pie crust:

1. Trace, cut out and sew two 8 inch brown circles right sides together leaving a small open space.

2. Turn inside.

3. Stitich the small open space close.

4. Center the pie filling on top of pie crust. Pin in place.

5. Using your pins, pinch and pin up edges of pie crust around filling and sew in place forming a fluted edge. Hide the long sewing stitches in the filling.

5. Cut a piece of leftover fabric from crust 1 ''wide by 5" long. Fold in half long ways and sew. Then fold again forming a loop . Sew loop on the back of your pie(see last picture).

You can be creative and sew or glue tiny beads on top of the filling or attach a self stick magnet to the back.

These hand made pies make perfect kitchen gifts.
